Iditarod training

We had our first ice storm of the year yesterday and while it was relatively tame, it did force me off the roads in the morning. I've been getting quite accustomed to running at Sutton and it's actually been good for the most part as i've been able to really jump the miles up and not feel quite as rough as I probably would had all those miles been on the roads. My personal record has been 8 laps in a single run so far although I also added some inner sections that lifted the total mileage for the run to 13-14 miles, even better was the fact that Asher was with me for the duration and with the distance to and from the trails he and I amassed 2+ hours of running. I'm actually planning a 5k time trial for devil-dog after his base phase is complete so stay tuned.

Jerry, Stu, and I will be travelling to Austin for the 3m 1/2 marathon in a week's time where I will be looking for a satisfactory performance in the 70 minute range. I'm keeping the training going right through the race but am going to try to freshen up a bit as I've really hit the miles hard for the last 2 weeks and while a trip to the Chinese buffet will no doubt help recovery, I am in need of a modest down week if I have any hope of running a sub 70 effort. We're all eagerly awaiting Meagan's effort and after comparing notes with Camille Herron, have no doubt that she's capable of a qualifier.

yeah, we have to roll on Sunday after a little looking around town. I really want to see these new sneaks as I missed keith's visit and obviously am always up for coffee and snacks, but alas.

I'm spreading the gospel in a few other forums. Firstly, I'm going to be remarking to the appeal of Okie fitness advocates, hopefully including crossfitters, at okathletes.com . Additionally, I'm keeping a training log at Fast Running Blog , where there are a few other Oklahomans, namely Jason Butler and Jake Buhler along with some other salty characters. I needed somewhere to tally the training miles so right now it will be this place, although I'm well aware there are probably better online training logs. I'm back to logging some miles, feeling fitter and having good company from Asher, I think his secret is recovering well, utilizing the most comfortable places to sleep and plenty of strides chasing squirrels.

Still not running so I've been on to other pursuits, namely a state record largemouth bass. Now maybe there are other states where the bass get a little bigger (California- where they feed their bass fat lazy rainbow trout) but I maintain that if I catch anything over 5 pounds from my kayak, it's going to feel pretty massive because and it makes for an exciting battle. I headed to Mountain Lake on Thursday and caught quite a few fish, the largest of which was actually a catfish that hit a tube jig. I had fun touring around in the yak and can't help but wonder when I will make an epic overnight trip in one. My two destinations of choice would have to be The Boundary Waters/ Quetico and Baja, California. Highlight of the week: watching the sunset on the OKC skyline from the rooftop patio at my buddy Ben's b-day party. A couple of enterprising baker divas produced a solid fondant representation on the cake. Food is good and when it when it comes in bright non-naturally oc...

Just to the Right

That would be the theme for last night's outing to OKC with der boys. The trend of feeling off continues to overwhelm and I can't help but chalk it up to the "smorgasboard effect." Contemporary wisdom tells us that fusion is all the rage and who am I to blow against the wind? At some point however, I think that can lead to an assemblage frought with gastronomic peril and, worse, something that gives little Scotty D a tummy ache. Cue the scene, we had put down a few stouts and pale ales prior to departure from Stu's. I, of course, was lauded for my incredible driving ability over the perhaps 2 mile route to Cheever's. Upon arrival we ordered a couple bottles of vino and some apps. I think this is where the trouble began. The first combo would be the Malbec/Hummus/Fried Calamari/Pinot combo only to be outdone by the proceeding Merlot/Nacho/Pecan, Chocolate,& Ice Cream Ball conglomeration. Stu knew something was up and opted for a jog back to the house where ...
