mighty lizards ruled the sky...

Recap of weekend:
Stu/Kat, Spenis and I met up for a jog on Friday then packed up the Rodeo, poured some road sodas and high-tailed it to Tulsa for an abbreviated stay. Upon arrival, burgers were consumed and some quality ball tossing with Marley filled out the evening. I was pretty bushed, with some residual soreness from Thursday's tempo run with Billy, but the legs felt capable of some pacing duties for Stu's assault of the K9K. I didn't sleep great, but woke to good spirits from the crew and the laying down of a gauntlet between Mike and Stu about who could finish their respective races in less time (Mike ended up finishing his 5k in ~27:XX, so we owe him beer next time). Stu and I felt decent and slipped through 5k in 16:45 after having to run through the fun runners with kids and dogs (a little kid and another runner collided further back, marking yet another instance of ill-advised course direction). Carrot-top was a pleasant addition to the chase group for a while, before fading a bit to run 17:03. Stu and I definitely picked it up for the last 4k but I'm dubious of the accuracy of the course. In any case Stu never ceases to impress as he hasn't been doing any workouts, just some long runs with Kat, who also ran very well to garner 1st in the ladies division. Kyle King, in arm warmers and fresh from temporary retirement?, slaughtered everyone to take home $100.

On Sunday, I got up way too early to head up to the city to run on the marathon course and hopefully take a good whack at 20 miles. Unfortunately, I never caught up with Jerry who rolled out at the start. It was dark for the first half of the run and I could never even tell if he was in front of me. I also managed to run off course and miss water stops until ~16miles in which was bad because I had some stomach issues and was needing the fluids. I had to make a couple pit stops, slow down and regroup before being able to cruise in at a decent pace. I actually tried some pretzels at the one aid station i did find and surprisingly they went down pretty well. I was in one of those moods where the sugary sweet GUs tasted horrible and I think the sodium along with water was all I really needed. I'm not sure what I ran but I think it ended up being around 20 miles and despite having stomach issues, I persevered and felt better coming in to the finish. My body really didn't feel horrible afterwards, I was just dead from the lack of sleep over the past few days. It's hard to translate what a hard 20 would have felt like but I think I can at least cover the distance without causing myself serious harm so maybe I will go for a 26.2 mile tour of OKC in 5 weeks.

Dude! I'm stoked about OKC- sounds like they'll be a ton of old cronies there!

yeah- it's hard not to get sentimental about this one. I can't think of another likely occassion when so many of us will likely toe the line for such an event. I'm still a bit under motivated. I gotta get back in the routine of getting my ass out the door for some longer runs.

ride the wave

I hit the track this morning for some work. It was another nice morning but I can't imagine the humidity abating for long. Jordan and Meagan had matching workouts of 4-8-12-16-16-12-8-4 w/ 60 second rest. The paces prescribed were quick and I didn't run great but I tried to hang with Jordan on the middle reps. I should hopefully be able to substantially improve on my efforts this morning and maybe feel better doing it. I did something like a 200-500-1100-800-1600-1200-600-200, I wasn't happy with missing out on the first 1600 but I had to break for the restroom and I at least touched on some faster paces on the other reps. The recovery made it a pretty honest effort and I at least was able to sneak below 5:00 pace. My goal for the summer is breaking 15:00 so we'll see what happens. The picture above is my uncle's digital rendering of a wave complete with a frigate bird. I think he used only Adobe throughout the process.

some ups and downs

I ran the Little Rock Marathon last weekend, finishing in 2:28:30ish. The race director took good care of all the elite runners, giving both the 1/2 and fullers the option of staying in the race hotel 2 nights prior to the race. I will note that their standards seem fairly relaxed and yet they gave us some nice little perks, with staging areas before and after and dinner before and whatnot. I again have to tip my hat because this is clearly not the norm in today's race circuit and if it is offered, there is often a very limited number of allowed elite spots. I had contacted the Woodlands marathon for instance and was not going to be offered any more than a comped entry, even though the marathon field was very limited. I have a number of issues surrounding this phenomenon but will just make note of the races that make an effort to help someone like myself. The course at Little Rock is quite winding and undulating for about 18 miles but then smoothes out and allows for a steady fin...

blog, blog, blog

I'm spreading the gospel in a few other forums. Firstly, I'm going to be remarking to the appeal of Okie fitness advocates, hopefully including crossfitters, at okathletes.com . Additionally, I'm keeping a training log at Fast Running Blog , where there are a few other Oklahomans, namely Jason Butler and Jake Buhler along with some other salty characters. I needed somewhere to tally the training miles so right now it will be this place, although I'm well aware there are probably better online training logs. I'm back to logging some miles, feeling fitter and having good company from Asher, I think his secret is recovering well, utilizing the most comfortable places to sleep and plenty of strides chasing squirrels.
